Alumni SpotLight: Mark P.

     Alumni Spotlight: Mark P.

Hello Guys! My name is Mark P. and I graduated from The Salon Professional Academy Appleton in April 2015.

I knew I wanted to be part of the industry because I was doing creative work before my cosmetology career. I was a fashion stylist and worked on fashion shoots, so being exposed to hairstylists let me see a new avenue of creativity and income. It was the next best step in creating my life how I wanted to live. I never wanted to leave fashion, but I knew dressing people wasn’t going to be my money maker unless I moved. I didn’t want to move away from this area. I still don’t, but I needed to start the next path to success in my professional life. HAIR became my baby and I couldn’t have been more fulfilled.

I am now taking my abundant amount of energy and my passion for pushing people to their next greatest potential to elevate the industry in a win-win kind of way! I have created my own business where I will go to cosmetology schools, independent salons, hair show circuits, and individual stylists to build the human first which will, in turn, build the business. Our industry is always preaching to positivity and personal growth. We see this from the most popular hairstylist with the most followers out there. I love that they are using their platform to spread joy, but we need more concentration and structure as to how the stylist absorbing that joy really takes time to work on themselves. I loved being behind the chair, but I found that my purpose in this industry is to focus on the human side of the business. “BETTER YOU, BETTER US” is the core of my program.

Why are you passionate about this industry?

My passion for this industry lays in the place of ever-changing and never-ending. I don’t love restrictions on creativity and growth. This industry has LIMITLESS potential! You want to be 65+ and still doing hair? YOU CAN! You want to be in the pages of Vogue? YOU CAN! You want to teach barbering on Instagram? YOU CAN! You want to educate the future of our industry in cosmetology schools? YOU CAN! You can do whatever you want within this industry. You have to work really darn hard, but it will put you where you want to be.

Where did life take you after The Salon Professional Academy and what has your journey been like since?

Life after The Salon Professional Academy took me to Anagen 11. I was a full-time hairstylist there. My out of the box creative mind put me on the Creative Team. In 2019 I got to create a schedule for the year of our creative shoots. It came from a place of building on our skills, pushing ourselves, and creating fun creative work. Anagen shoots all our marketing in house. What you see on our screens is our work. It is an amazing outlet to be able to flex the skills of session hairstyling. Listen, I would love to win a NAHA! Don’t think I won’t. I may have started a new business, but my creative side will ALWAYS be part of me. YES!

Tell me something that you learned about yourself or the industry (or both) from attending school at The Salon Professional Academy?

While in school I took a lot away. I was actually an apprentice before I walked into the doors of TSPA. I had some elevated skills, but not a lot of the fundamentals. It was so great to be able to learn square one applications and techniques. Understand different facets of the industry. Finding out about limitless potential came from cosmetology school!

I chose The Salon Professional Academy as my school of choice because it is the most on-trend, progressive, inventive, and brand supported school in my area. Redken is a legend within the industry. To have that brand back up your school, you know you’re in the best place to foster growth.

How did TSPA APPLETON help shape you into the stylist you are now?

While at The Salon Professional Academy I won an opportunity to work with the Global Creative team at Redken’s Symposium in Las Vegas! I loved creating for photoshoots to begin with, but it was there that I got a taste of behind the scenes hard work, creative minds supporting each other, and to witness what time and hard work can lead to. I was able to learn from people who lived in Italy, Germany, the USA, and Australia. It was one of the brightest spots in my career. SAM VILLA let me assist him for a bit! Guido Paulo had released a styling line that year. Being on the fashion team for the symposium, that’s what we got to work with. We created runway looks and faux bobs, and hair that inspired creatives. IT WAS INCREDIBLE!

It was so great to represent The Salon Professional Academy of Appleton, WI on a grand stage. At the end of the artist’s big hair show, they all walk out on stage in front of 10,000+ stylists from all over the world. I knew at that moment that I belonged in this industry more than ever.

What are some of your professional goals?

CHANGE THE INDUSTRY FOR THE BETTER! I feel it in my bones baby. It is time to take us to the next level of what is expected from this industry. Time to connect, collaborate, give education opportunities more often, work on the human side of the stylist, so we can keep growing and finding success. Live Lively will do that. My business will set new standards from a place of care. I don’t want to tell you that you are bad. I want to compliment and help you realize more of yourself. Any point in your cosmetology journey can welcome Live Lively. Just starting? Let me help you navigate and find your vision. Ready to quit? Let me help you find that passion again and teach you personal growth skills to keep you going. Own your own business and can’t see how to reach the next level of growth? Bring Live Lively into your salon to help nurture growth and support what you have. Need some motivation? I HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH TO GIVE!

What advice would you give someone contemplating going to cosmetology school?

Wanting to enter this industry? Do it if you want to be challenged in building yourself creatively and learn a knowledgeable skill set. Want to say you have a career without going to a traditional education system? This is where you can do it. Don’t do it if you want an easy out. Our industry deserves respect and demands it. Being a cosmetologist is so fulfilling, but comes with so much hard work. Hard work that ALWAYS pays off. We are more than a curl set and covering grays. We are chemists, salespeople, educators, your new best friend, and beyond. If you want a lot more than a traditional education go see Michaela the Admission Director at TSPA. Feel that energy of creative and limitless potential!

What’s next?

LIVE LIVELY is what is next. It’s the industry disruptor! It’s the industry’s change in energy! It’s the connection we should have as an industry! We should remain, individuals, because that’s what makes you your own star. We should, however, be open to connecting to each other to support educational support. Be able to offer consistency to a client who has to move out of state and has to find a new salon. LIVE LIVELY is a new standard for yourself, your client, your career.

Thank you so much for bringing me in as a spot in the Alumni Spotlight! I got to reflect on my time spent in this industry and see how far I’ve come. It felt so good and brought great energy to my momentum!

If you live in the Fox Cities area, or willing to drive in for a career, go to The Salon Professional Academy! IT WILL BE WORTH IT! Love and respect for the current students getting after it to grow a career. YOU ARE THE NEXT BIG THING!

Alumni Spotlight: Delaney W.

Alumni Spotlight: Delaney W.

Meet Delaney W. she is a TSPA Appleton Alumni that graduated on September 27, 2018. Delaney started her journey in our 2017 September Cosmetology class where she joined 11 other talented student stylists. At TSPA, we know that a career in cosmetology is not just about a haircut or passing the state board exam; it’s about innovation in hair color and techniques, basic skin and nail care, knowledge of business strategies, and training in guest services. Our Redken-infused cosmetology program will not only prepare you for the state board exam but more importantly, for a long-term career in the industry. The year-long Cosmetology program is designed to train students for much more than passing the state boards. We develop the entire salon professional with great technical ability, business & marketing training, and the guest handling skills that are in high demand by top salons and spas.

After a journey that has brought her to many places, Delaney finally landed in a place that she calls home, Sankalpa Salon. Working alongside some fantastic and inspirational stylists Delaney gets an opportunity to learn one-on-one with Redken trained artists to help her grow, learn and succeed in her craft.

1. Why are you passionate about this industry?

I’m passionate about this industry because I want to make people look and feel their best. It’s very rewarding to see people embrace new trends and styles.

2. Where did life take you after The Salon Professional Academy and what has your journey been like since?

I would say my journey has consisted of a few ups and downs. I landed in a salon that didn’t feel like home. Another opportunity opened up and I was able to train as an associate under an amazing Redken Artist who eventually opened up her own salon and I was asked to join her team and I took the opportunity.

3. Tell me something that you learned about yourself or the industry (or both) from attending school at The Salon Professional Academy?

The reason that I am the stylist today is because of the educators that work at the TSPA. They are extremely knowledgeable about Redken, a brand that grew to love. After I graduated, I could still reach out to the educators for guidance. They truly helped me see my true potential when I sometimes couldn’t see it for myself.

4. What is something amazing you have gotten to do because of being a stylist and tell me about the experience?

One of the coolest experiences that I got to be part of was going to The Redken Exchange in New York City in August of 2019. Being surrounded by Redken Artists and other stylists for hands-on learning was really rewarding. I was also able to meet a Redken Global Artist and a few other Redken Artists.

5. What are some of your professional goals?

My current goal right now is to become a level 3 stylist.

6. What advice would you give someone contemplating going to cosmetology school?

Try it! You might like it! Don’t be swayed by others opinions that you have to go to a 4-year college. I’ve met some of the most amazing people in the industry. You never know where your creativity might lead you.

5 Characteristic Traits That Lead To Salon Success

A successful career in Cosmetology is only half of the battle when it comes to achieving and maintaining salon success.  TSPA Appleton’s beauty school program is designed to train students for much more than passing the state boards. We develop the entire salon professional with great technical ability, business & marketing training, and the guest handling skills that are in high demand by top salons and spas. However, while all those traits are super important let’s dive into 5 Character Traits that can lead salon professionals to great success.

  1. Determination– Determination is the force or drive one has when they want to achieve their goals and dreams. With long hours, rotating schedule, competitive market, product sales, building and maintaining a steady clientele, cosmetology is not for the faint of heart. It’s extremely important to make sure that focus and determination are key elements in helping you achieve your short term goals and eventually long term goals.
  2. Listening– Being a successful hairstylist means listening to your clients in more ways than one. Active listening is extremely important but so is being aware of your client’s body language. Noticing visual cues can help you know what your clients’ needs and expectations are.
  3. Creativity– Cosmetology is a creative field where clients are able to rely on their stylist’s options to help them make important decisions when it comes to their looks. Being someone who is creative you are able to find beauty in almost everything and in turn, this allows you to create beauty every single day by working with new innovative techniques.
  4. Confidence– A key ingredient in having your own happiness and success depends largely on how confident you are. Self-confidence is all about believing that you have the power within yourself to be and do whatever you set your mind too. As you enter the beauty industry, remember that a successful beauty artist is a journey, not a sprint. All you need is experience and willingness to grow. “The key to your own success and happiness lies within.” – Jon Gonzales
  5. Passion– As a beauty artist, hair and body becomes your canvas. Your love for creating beautiful work comes from the tools that are taught and combined with numerous influences that create a masterpiece. You cannot put a price on the joy that one feels after you create a lasting change that helps them feel beautiful inside and out. Without passion, there is no purpose and no life in the masterpiece that was created.

Halloween Makeup Spooktacular

Your pumpkins have been picked and carved, your house has been decorated with fake spider webs and spiders, but have you chosen what you will be for Halloween? Halloween is the time of year where you can be anything you want to be. If you are looking for some fun Halloween-esque inspiration, look no further TSPA Appleton’s very talented student artist, Alyssa,  will show us some easy to recreate but fun looks to make this years Halloween Costume come to life.

Here are two Halloween makeup looks you can create using your favorite makeup products.

1. Spider

Fix your eyes upon this stellar 3D Halloween spider makeup look! This Pinterest inspired look was created by Alyssa who achieved made the spider come to life by creating some detailed shadowing, an expertly applied concealer and eyelid primer to insure that these spider legs popped!

What you’ll need:

  • Light Foundation (or foundation that makes your skin tone)
  • Either Orange or Purple Eye Shadow
  • Black Eyeliner
  • White Face Paint
  • Black Face Paint
  • Black Eye Shadow

Alyssa recommends that you use eyelid primer to insure that your eye shadows will be as pigmented as possible (note: dont set with anything, you want this look to be as tacky as possible.) She used James Charles Morphy palette as the eyelid color and used face paint which could be substantiated for eyeliner. She then used eye shadow to create the shadows to make spider leg illusions.

2. The Stitched Face Doll

Here we’ve got the Stitched Face Doll,  this intricate look is for those of you who are wanting something a little less creepy but something that is easy to throw together last min.

What you’ll need:

  • Light Foundation (or foundation that matches your skin tone)
  • Brown Eyeliner
  • Black Eyeliner
  • White Face Paint
  • Medium Shade Eye Shadow  (brown)
  • Black Eye Shadow

To achieve the Stitched Doll Face look Alyssa suggests first applying primer and foundation that matches your particular skin tone. Once your foundation has been evenly applied you can start drawing on the lines of where the splits would be on the face. To draw these most effectively use a eyebrow pencil and fill in using eyeliner or the eyebrow pencil. Use that same eyebrow pencil to draw the stitches over the lines. Shade each side of the line to make it look 3D. Fill in the stitches using white face paint and then once dried go went back over where the holes would go on the and used a black eyes shadow. To finish this look out, go in with dark brown eye shadow and underline the stitches to make the looked raised. Then go back through and added highlight to the stitches to make them stand out.

Meet The Artist:

“Art has always been a passion of mine. Ever since I was a little girl I told myself I was going to be an artist. As I got older, I was not sure what I wanted to do with my talents, I had tossed around a few ideas that never really went anywhere. It wasn’t until I came to TSPA that I found my true calling. Attending TSPA has shown me I am at the right school and on the right path to success. Whether its on a canvas, skin, or hair I loving being creative. My goal after I graduate is to move to the west coast and work for movies as a special effects make up artist. I would love to own my own salon and have my artwork displayed throughout  the place to showcase my love for art. Being a cosmetology student has taught me so many things  beyond just hair techniques and has pushed me to strive for the best version of myself. ” -Alyssa B
