WHAT IS A COSMETOLOGIST?

What does a cosmetologist do? Being a cosmetologist goes beyond just cutting hair in a salon setting. As a cosmetologist, you always have to be on the cutting edge of trends and techniques. Licensed cosmetologists are well versed in their training. Their training covers all beauty aspects, client management, environment safety, and maintenance. In order to be truly successful, you also need to have the skills to accomplish nail and aesthetics services. Because cosmetologists work in so many different fields, you have to be exceptional in your management skills while also making each client feel like a star.

WHAT IS COSMETOLOGY?

So what is cosmetology? Cosmetology can be defined as “the professional skill or practice of beautifying the face, hair, and skin.” As you can see, cosmetology covers more than just hair. As a cosmetologist, you are also well trained in skincare, nails, and makeup. A cosmetologist can have many duties including:

As a professional cosmetologist, the opportunities are limitless. With fashion and style accounting for so much in so many industries, cosmetologists are always in high demand. This gives any person with a great eye for style and personality the chance to enhance their lives. Just imagine, you can travel the world working with high-end product developers or be the hair and makeup stylist on the next blockbuster film! Here are some career paths cosmetologists have taken:

Salon Owner / Salon Consultant – Be your own boss or consult other salon owners how to be more successful.
Platform Artists – Take center stage with your big personality as a stylist & brand expert at beauty shows, educate stylists on new techniques…
Fashion Stylist – Be the stylist behind the scenes of runways and have your work be seen around the world

In order to start a career in cosmetology, you need the proper training. There are several requirements to become a professional cosmetologist, including passing the State Board exam. In order to prepare yourself for the exam, taking the proper courses offered at a beauty school is the best solution. Your training should enhance your creativity and give you a professional skill set. Some of the best cosmetologists are the ones that can blend their creativity into the beauty industry. If they can express their passion for fashion within the hairstyles, techniques and more they are able to produce.

2016 Modern Salon Award

TSPA-Appleton wins Modern Salon Excellence in Education Award

The purpose of the MODERN SALON’s Excellence in Education program is to help the professional beauty school community gather, share and celebrate examples of great salon education experiences and beauty career development happening across the country.

In 2016, the crop of cosmetology schools entering the program brought plenty of benchmarks, measurable results and innovation into their application process. “School pride and powerful results were very evident this year,” says MODERN SALON Editorial Director Michele Musgrove. “We are so impressed with the variety of top schools in the U.S. that entered MODERN SALON’s Excellence in Education 2016 program. We have chosen a select few that we believe show leadership and best practices that other schools can use to learn and grow.”

Honorees were determined based on key criteria in each category and grouped according to school size or whether or not they entered as a multi-unit school or single location. Two top honorees are recognized in each category—one individual school location and a multi-location school organization—and were announced Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, at the AACS Annual Convention & Expo in Orlando, Florida.

“On behalf of the entire professional beauty industry, we express gratitude that there are so many professional cosmetology schools continuing to do amazing and valuable work to shape the future of beauty,” said MODERN SALON Publisher Steve Reiss. “The purpose of Excellence in Education is to make sure more of these great schools get the attention they deserve.”

Fall Career Fair 2016

Making Connections at TSPA’s Fall Career Fair

On November 7th, The Salon Professional Academy-Appleton hosted a Fall Career Fair. It was an amazing turnout, with 24 salons and spas in attendance. Not only do we want to help students become successful Cosmetologists and Aestheticians, but we go even farther than honing our students’ skills. We provide opportunities for students to meet Salon and Spa owners and managers before graduation, so when they are ready to apply for jobs, they already have a career network.
