Alumni Spotlight: Delaney W.

Alumni Spotlight: Delaney W.

Meet Delaney W. she is a TSPA Appleton Alumni that graduated on September 27, 2018. Delaney started her journey in our 2017 September Cosmetology class where she joined 11 other talented student stylists. At TSPA, we know that a career in cosmetology is not just about a haircut or passing the state board exam; it’s about innovation in hair color and techniques, basic skin and nail care, knowledge of business strategies, and training in guest services. Our Redken-infused cosmetology program will not only prepare you for the state board exam but more importantly, for a long-term career in the industry. The year-long Cosmetology program is designed to train students for much more than passing the state boards. We develop the entire salon professional with great technical ability, business & marketing training, and the guest handling skills that are in high demand by top salons and spas.

After a journey that has brought her to many places, Delaney finally landed in a place that she calls home, Sankalpa Salon. Working alongside some fantastic and inspirational stylists Delaney gets an opportunity to learn one-on-one with Redken trained artists to help her grow, learn and succeed in her craft.

1. Why are you passionate about this industry?

I’m passionate about this industry because I want to make people look and feel their best. It’s very rewarding to see people embrace new trends and styles.

2. Where did life take you after The Salon Professional Academy and what has your journey been like since?

I would say my journey has consisted of a few ups and downs. I landed in a salon that didn’t feel like home. Another opportunity opened up and I was able to train as an associate under an amazing Redken Artist who eventually opened up her own salon and I was asked to join her team and I took the opportunity.

3. Tell me something that you learned about yourself or the industry (or both) from attending school at The Salon Professional Academy?

The reason that I am the stylist today is because of the educators that work at the TSPA. They are extremely knowledgeable about Redken, a brand that grew to love. After I graduated, I could still reach out to the educators for guidance. They truly helped me see my true potential when I sometimes couldn’t see it for myself.

4. What is something amazing you have gotten to do because of being a stylist and tell me about the experience?

One of the coolest experiences that I got to be part of was going to The Redken Exchange in New York City in August of 2019. Being surrounded by Redken Artists and other stylists for hands-on learning was really rewarding. I was also able to meet a Redken Global Artist and a few other Redken Artists.

5. What are some of your professional goals?

My current goal right now is to become a level 3 stylist.

6. What advice would you give someone contemplating going to cosmetology school?

Try it! You might like it! Don’t be swayed by others opinions that you have to go to a 4-year college. I’ve met some of the most amazing people in the industry. You never know where your creativity might lead you.

Hairstyles We’re Thankful for This Thanksgiving

There’s plenty of things we’re thankful for this Thanksgiving! Having a good hair day is one of them. Take a look at which hairstyles we’re thankful for this Thanksgiving.

Top Knot

Hairstyles we're thankful for

The top knot is our ultimate hairstyle we’re thankful for this Thanksgiving. It is our savior ‘do when we simply require a zero effort hairstyle that doesn’t need a multitude of hair care products and styling tools to perfect, just a small hair elastic and a couple of bobby pins to secure the messy bun in place.

Bed Hair

Hairstyles we're thankful for

We’re thankful for bed hair being labelled as one of the coolest hair trends of the year as now we finally have a reason to shake up to work with hair that looks a little disheveled and pass it off with a ‘honestly, it’s meant to look like this’ face. Not only does it mean that we can spend less time on our hair in the mornings, waking up on the wrong side of the bed has never looked so good!

Braids

Hairstyles we're thankful for

We’re forever thankful for the Brady Bunch. As you may know, here at The Salon Professional Academy we love our braids, and with so many different braids to choose from, we’re never bored of what we can do with three strands of hair. Whether it’s a bog-standard three-stranded braid, a halo/crown plait or a waterfall braid, there’s always a braid we can turn to when we’re in need of an intricate hairstyle-pronto!

The Ponytail

Hairstyles we're thankful for

Lastly, we’re giving a thanks to the ponytail for being our best friend in times when a glamorous blow dry or complicated up-do just won’t do. We sometimes forget just how versatile a good old fashioned ponytail actually is; from 90’s high pony’s, to sleek ponytails gathered at the nape, it’s fair to say that the ponytail has been somewhat revolutionized since its hay day of being a ‘get hair out of the face’ kind of hairstyle. That’s why we’re thankful that the traditional ponytail is back in full swing.

We definitely have a guilty pleasure for all of these hairstyles! Which hairstyles are you thankful for?

TRIM HUNGER to Support Healthier Eating in Fox Valley Schools

Over the last three years, hunger awareness in the beauty industry has helped feed hundreds of people. Hairdressers, students and clients nationwide are successfully trimming out the need for food in America.

WHO WE ARE

Trim Hunger/HuTerra is in partnership with a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and donations to address the issue of hunger both locally in the fox cities of Wisconsin and in America. Through its affiliation with the nationwide beauty school franchise The Salon Professional Academy and Elevate salon institute with the help of generous corporate sponsors, Trim Hunger is igniting the passion to help those in need in the hearts of beauty professionals all across the country. In an industry already focused on helping, giving, and transforming lives, Trim Hunger will have the limitless support of beauty schools, salons, spas, and manufacturers to provide nutritious meals for those greatest in need.

HOW WE BEGAN

In 2014, Josif Wittnik of Appleton, WI was introduced to some frightening and saddening statistics regarding the number of people in his own community, including many children, who were going without food each day. Motivated by this daily tragedy in his hometown, Josif set out to do something about it. As the co-owner of a local The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA) and Salon CTI and Day Spa, he leveraged their reach and the caring hearts of the other owners, staff, and students to sponsor fundraisers through a variety of activities under the name Cut Out Hunger; playing on the hairdresser pun. By the end of 2013, they had raised thousands of dollars to help the local food bank get meals out into the community. Knowing that more needed to be done, both locally and across the United States, Josif brought this issue to the attention of anyone who would listen. This effort reached a turning point in January of 2015 while Josif was attending the biennial Redken Symposium in Las Vegas. Upon sharing his story with fellow TSPA owners, salon professionals, and a variety of executives with Redken and L’Oreal, Josif received an overwhelming response from people wanting to get involved. Since then, the brand evolved to Trim Hunger (in keeping with the salon industry theme) and continues to receive an outpouring of support through The Salon Professional Academy franchise and corporate sponsorship from both within and far outside the beauty industry.

On Sunday, October 21st from 9a-3p, The Salon Professional Academy, located at 3355 W. College Ave. Appleton, WI., will be offering $20 haircuts to the public to raise money to help support our local youth with farm to table food, healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle. 100% of the proceeds will stay in the Fox Valley Community!
To schedule your haircut please call us at 920-968-0433. Walk-ins are also welcome!

Learn Better, Earn Better, Live Better.

Is It Time To Make A Career Change?

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Sadly, this old cliché only serves to hold many people back from following their dreams. After all, it doesn’t matter how old a person is. Being alive means that we are constantly changing and growing, and it’s the pursuit of new goals that keeps us thriving. And excited about getting out of bed in the morning.

If you’ve dreamed of studying cosmetology because you love working with hair, skin and nails, or maybe an aesthetician because you love beauty, makeup and skincare, what’s stopping you from going to beauty school? If you think that age is a problem, you have another thing coming. Cosmetology is a field where people of all ages can excel. All that matters is that you’re a people person who loves helping others feel good about themselves through hair styling, makeup, nails, skin care or related areas.

Here are a handful of reasons why when you are older, you can and should still attend beauty school:

Life Experience

It’s no secret that hair stylists and estheticians have to be able to talk to people. They need to know how to read and adapt to the personalities of their clients. And the older a person is, the more experience they have with this. Just like a bartender, a cosmetologist can become a therapist of sorts, and the more they can relate to others and maybe even offer sage advice, the better. This creates rapport and client loyalty.

Greater Discipline and Drive

Older students understand how important it is to commit to their selected course of study. Especially if they’ve experienced any dissatisfaction in earlier jobs. And let’s face it, if a person is considering starting a career in cosmetology at this stage of their life, it’s not because they’re happy in their current employment. So an older student is more likely to be successful, both in school and in their career.

More Settled in Life

Often, young people start going to school but then “life happens.” They get married, or drop out to get a full-time job because they need more money right away, or they have a baby and their priorities shift. But older students are more likely to be settled down. They’re well enough established in their lives to dedicate the time and energy to a new career endeavor.

Age is Just a Number!

Fact is, except for a very few examples, there’s no such thing as “too old.” More people every day are changing their lives and fulfilling their dreams. We all owe ourselves the favor of going for whatever it is that will enrich our lives, no matter what our age.

The Importance of Job Shadowing

First Step In Becoming A Cosmetologist Or An Esthetician – Job Shadowing

Whether you’re a high school student or in your first years of college, you may be tossing around ideas of what you’d like to do with your future.  What career would you like to pursue? What type of lifestyle would you like to live?  Where would you want to settle down geographically and call home?  If you’re someone who is wavering on what type of career to choose or even someone who is pretty certain that you have it all figured out, you may want to set up some job shadowing experiences to make sure that you’re aware of what your “dream job” entails.

Job shadowing is the opportunity to observe others performing their daily routine in their environment.  It allows you to explore specific careers and to get a realistic picture of the tasks performed for that job.  This will allow you to make an informed decision about your career of choice!

The benefits and importance of job shadowing at The Salon Professional Academy, Appleton:

  • The ability to ask questions like these: What made you choose The Salon Professional Academy? What made you choose this career?  If you could go back, would you change anything?  What is your favorite and least favorite thing about this career?  Do you have advice that may help to make my experience go more smoothly?
  • Hands-on experience:  When job shadowing at TSPA-Appleton, not only are you able to observe how tasks are completed on the salon area and experience what classroom learning is like, but you will also get some hands-on experience yourself.  This is certainly beneficial to inspire or deter you from pursuing this career path further.
  • Scholarship possibilities: There are foundations out there, for example, the Beauty Changes Lives Foundation,  that offer scholarships for students seeking Cosmetology, Aesthetics, Makeup and Nail Artistry fields.  They offer scholarships to help offset the cost of your tuition.  Persons applying for these scholarships must go through the application process and if selected as a finalist, and will need to be enrolled in the program for that scholarship.  Job shadowing in that particular field can help show scholarship providers that you are serious about a career in that field.
  • Networking: Job shadowing is a great way to meet people in the profession that you are seeking.  In the future, you may be able to use those people to answer questions for you or have them write letters of recommendation on your behalf. While shadowing, you will also meet other students that can answer questions for you.

Job shadowing can be done through out the entire year, however summer is a great time to set up job shadowing opportunities. Enlist the help of your parents to make arrangements, suggestions, or to contact us on your behalf.  Set up job shadowing well in advance and, if possible, observe someone  for more than one day to get a better grasp of their day-to-day tasks.

Job shadowing is an invaluable experience that will help you narrow down your career choice and link your classroom experiences with work requirements.

If you are interested in setting up a job shadow here at The Salon Professional Academy, Appleton, please CALL Admissions at 920-944-2758, TEXT 920-931-0090 or EMAIL admissions@tspaappleton.com. We look forward to connecting with you!
