The Salon Professional Academy Appleton Receives 2019 Best of Appleton Award
The Salon Professional Academy Appleton has been selected for the 2019 Best of Appleton Award in the Beauty School category by the Appleton Award Program.
Each year, the Appleton Award Program identifies companies that are believed to have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and our community. These exceptional companies help to contribute to the local community’s unique identity, continue to build personal relationships with their customers that help establish a sense of community and fosters innovation.
Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2019 Appleton Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Appleton Award Program and data provided by third parties.
About Appleton Award Program
The Appleton Award Program is an annual awards program honoring the achievements and accomplishments of local businesses throughout the Appleton area. Recognition is given to those companies that have shown the ability to use their best practices and implemented programs to generate competitive advantages and long-term value.

Halloween Makeup Spooktacular
Your pumpkins have been picked and carved, your house has been decorated with fake spider webs and spiders, but have you chosen what you will be for Halloween? Halloween is the time of year where you can be anything you want to be. If you are looking for some fun Halloween-esque inspiration, look no further TSPA Appleton’s very talented student artist, Alyssa, will show us some easy to recreate but fun looks to make this years Halloween Costume come to life.
Here are two Halloween makeup looks you can create using your favorite makeup products.
1. Spider
Fix your eyes upon this stellar 3D Halloween spider makeup look! This Pinterest inspired look was created by Alyssa who achieved made the spider come to life by creating some detailed shadowing, an expertly applied concealer and eyelid primer to insure that these spider legs popped!
What you’ll need:
- Light Foundation (or foundation that makes your skin tone)
- Either Orange or Purple Eye Shadow
- Black Eyeliner
- White Face Paint
- Black Face Paint
- Black Eye Shadow
Alyssa recommends that you use eyelid primer to insure that your eye shadows will be as pigmented as possible (note: dont set with anything, you want this look to be as tacky as possible.) She used James Charles Morphy palette as the eyelid color and used face paint which could be substantiated for eyeliner. She then used eye shadow to create the shadows to make spider leg illusions.
2. The Stitched Face Doll
Here we’ve got the Stitched Face Doll, this intricate look is for those of you who are wanting something a little less creepy but something that is easy to throw together last min.
What you’ll need:
- Light Foundation (or foundation that matches your skin tone)
- Brown Eyeliner
- Black Eyeliner
- White Face Paint
- Medium Shade Eye Shadow (brown)
- Black Eye Shadow
To achieve the Stitched Doll Face look Alyssa suggests first applying primer and foundation that matches your particular skin tone. Once your foundation has been evenly applied you can start drawing on the lines of where the splits would be on the face. To draw these most effectively use a eyebrow pencil and fill in using eyeliner or the eyebrow pencil. Use that same eyebrow pencil to draw the stitches over the lines. Shade each side of the line to make it look 3D. Fill in the stitches using white face paint and then once dried go went back over where the holes would go on the and used a black eyes shadow. To finish this look out, go in with dark brown eye shadow and underline the stitches to make the looked raised. Then go back through and added highlight to the stitches to make them stand out.

“Art has always been a passion of mine. Ever since I was a little girl I told myself I was going to be an artist. As I got older, I was not sure what I wanted to do with my talents, I had tossed around a few ideas that never really went anywhere. It wasn’t until I came to TSPA that I found my true calling. Attending TSPA has shown me I am at the right school and on the right path to success. Whether its on a canvas, skin, or hair I loving being creative. My goal after I graduate is to move to the west coast and work for movies as a special effects make up artist. I would love to own my own salon and have my artwork displayed throughout the place to showcase my love for art. Being a cosmetology student has taught me so many things beyond just hair techniques and has pushed me to strive for the best version of myself. ” -Alyssa B

Why Traditional College isn’t the Answer
While college is certainly appropriate for some students and a prerequisite for some professions, crippling student debt, lack of job opportunities, and growing interest in pursuing passions outside the university path are driving students to explore a skills-based education. “The skills gap is the number one problem American businesses face”, said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, in a statement. For too long, a four-year degree has been touted as the best option for success after high school; “We start to believe that the best path for the most people happens to be the most expensive path,” said Mike Rowe, best known for his popular TV show ‘Dirty Jobs’. “And it also happens to be the path that has led to a skills gap of about 5.8 million positions and student loans of about 1.3 trillion …”
Rowe maintains we’ve done a disservice to high school students with our short-sighted focus on college. In fact, 36% of millennial college graduates with student loans now say they would have skipped college if they had understood the cost, research shows. Then there are the 30% of college students who go to public universities and 20% who attend private schools who haven’t earned degrees within six years, according to the National Student Clearinghouse. They racked up big bills without getting a college diploma in the process.
“About 40 years ago, we started telling the current generation that the best path for the most people was a four-year degree,” said Rowe. “But what happened … is they wound up promoting one form of education at the expense of all the other forms. College became higher education and apprenticeship programs, trade schools, community colleges, and all the job training opportunities, those became alternatives to education.”
With a higher-than-average job placement rate, an industry that has shown a growth for 30+ consecutive years, and an education-to-career track several years shorter than traditional colleges and universities, beauty school could prove to be more than just realizing your passion as a career…it could be the smartest professional career decision you can make!
2019 TSPA U Experience
Our Second Annual TSPA U Experience was held on August 20th. This all-day event was opened to the community to drop in and connect with students and educators. They saw our culture first hand, met with salons and learned about placement after graduation and discussed the future of a beauty student.
Guests were greeted with balloons, refreshments, grand prize drawings and local salons that filled the student salon training area. Those that participated in the event learned alongside our students in the classrooms and shadowed them as they performed services on guests and got to experience the TSPA culture first hand. All the while learning about the beauty industry and the rewards it has to offer as a successful career choice. Our TSPA U Experience spotlighted our students using their creativity, demonstrating new trendy hair styles and make-up applications.
The Salon Professional Academy students are some of the top recruited new stylists to premium salons in Wisconsin. Students, future students and their parents were able to see on the day of the TSPA U Experience some of the salons that they could potentially work at after graduation and what it takes to make sure they are prepared. We had many salons and spas join us, such as, The Barbershop, Create Salon and Spa, Salon CTI, Keith’s Hair House, New Style, Men’s Hair House, Sports Clips, Ulta Beauty, Mane Attraction, The Cutting Edge and many more premium salons and spas in the Fox Valley. Our students and guests were able to walk away with information, memories and amazing prizes.
This year’s TSPA U Experience was one for the books and we are so excited to see what next year holds! Student Spotlight: Meet the Aesthetician’s
There is something about self-care that is so satisfying. One important form of self-care is proper skincare, however, taking time out of your busy schedule to really focus on the important things like yourself and your skin care routine can be challenging. Your skin deserves to become part of your routine and your habits that make up your day- to-day lives and our Aesthetic students can help you with just that!!
What does an Aesthetic student do?
Aesthetic student is considered an Aesthetician. Aestheticians are specialists in the cleansing, beautification and preservation of the health of skin on the entire body including the face and neck. Our Aesthetics program teaches the latest techniques to purifying, balancing and renewing the skin as well as the artistry of make-up application. Because TSPA is proud to be a Bioelements Partner School we also offer a curriculum that is infused with the latest technical training from the industry leader in skincare.
What Types of Treatments do Student Aestheticians Perform?
Our Student Aestheticians spend 19 weeks being intensely trained on a number of specialized techniques for skin analysis to make sure that they are able to help their clients with a wide range of needs. Before any treatment is performed on a guest the student sits down with their guest and does a consultation. The consultation is to ensure that the student is getting to know the guest and their skin type so the right products are used for the end goal.

Why don’t I do this for a living?” I have a customer service background and can’t wait to add those skills to the ones that I have acquired here at TSPA! Maria- “My love for being an aesthetician began in 8th grade when I had terrible acne problems and I wanted to do something about it, that’s when I really got into skin care products! You can say I’m definitely a skin care junkie! I’m here at The Salon Professional Academy of Appleton to improve my knowledge more and grow more with the other aesthetician students. It is a very emotionally rewarding profession making people feel good, and in turn it makes me feel good! It really is happiness for all!! I love what I do and it shows!”

Hairstyles We’re Thankful for This Thanksgiving
There’s plenty of things we’re thankful for this Thanksgiving! Having a good hair day is one of them. Take a look at which hairstyles we’re thankful for this Thanksgiving.
Top Knot
The top knot is our ultimate hairstyle we’re thankful for this Thanksgiving. It is our savior ‘do when we simply require a zero effort hairstyle that doesn’t need a multitude of hair care products and styling tools to perfect, just a small hair elastic and a couple of bobby pins to secure the messy bun in place.
Bed Hair
We’re thankful for bed hair being labelled as one of the coolest hair trends of the year as now we finally have a reason to shake up to work with hair that looks a little disheveled and pass it off with a ‘honestly, it’s meant to look like this’ face. Not only does it mean that we can spend less time on our hair in the mornings, waking up on the wrong side of the bed has never looked so good!
Braids
We’re forever thankful for the Brady Bunch. As you may know, here at The Salon Professional Academy we love our braids, and with so many different braids to choose from, we’re never bored of what we can do with three strands of hair. Whether it’s a bog-standard three-stranded braid, a halo/crown plait or a waterfall braid, there’s always a braid we can turn to when we’re in need of an intricate hairstyle-pronto!
The Ponytail
Lastly, we’re giving a thanks to the ponytail for being our best friend in times when a glamorous blow dry or complicated up-do just won’t do. We sometimes forget just how versatile a good old fashioned ponytail actually is; from 90’s high pony’s, to sleek ponytails gathered at the nape, it’s fair to say that the ponytail has been somewhat revolutionized since its hay day of being a ‘get hair out of the face’ kind of hairstyle. That’s why we’re thankful that the traditional ponytail is back in full swing.

TRIM HUNGER to Support Healthier Eating in Fox Valley Schools
Over the last three years, hunger awareness in the beauty industry has helped feed hundreds of people. Hairdressers, students and clients nationwide are successfully trimming out the need for food in America.
WHO WE ARE
Trim Hunger/HuTerra is in partnership with a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and donations to address the issue of hunger both locally in the fox cities of Wisconsin and in America. Through its affiliation with the nationwide beauty school franchise The Salon Professional Academy and Elevate salon institute with the help of generous corporate sponsors, Trim Hunger is igniting the passion to help those in need in the hearts of beauty professionals all across the country. In an industry already focused on helping, giving, and transforming lives, Trim Hunger will have the limitless support of beauty schools, salons, spas, and manufacturers to provide nutritious meals for those greatest in need. 
HOW WE BEGAN
In 2014, Josif Wittnik of Appleton, WI was introduced to some frightening and saddening statistics regarding the number of people in his own community, including many children, who were going without food each day. Motivated by this daily tragedy in his hometown, Josif set out to do something about it. As the co-owner of a local The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA) and Salon CTI and Day Spa, he leveraged their reach and the caring hearts of the other owners, staff, and students to sponsor fundraisers through a variety of activities under the name Cut Out Hunger; playing on the hairdresser pun. By the end of 2013, they had raised thousands of dollars to help the local food bank get meals out into the community. Knowing that more needed to be done, both locally and across the United States, Josif brought this issue to the attention of anyone who would listen. This effort reached a turning point in January of 2015 while Josif was attending the biennial Redken Symposium in Las Vegas. Upon sharing his story with fellow TSPA owners, salon professionals, and a variety of executives with Redken and L’Oreal, Josif received an overwhelming response from people wanting to get involved. Since then, the brand evolved to Trim Hunger (in keeping with the salon industry theme) and continues to receive an outpouring of support through The Salon Professional Academy franchise and corporate sponsorship from both within and far outside the beauty industry.
On Sunday, October 21st from 9a-3p, The Salon Professional Academy, located at 3355 W. College Ave. Appleton, WI., will be offering $20 haircuts to the public to raise money to help support our local youth with farm to table food, healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle. 100% of the proceeds will stay in the Fox Valley Community!To schedule your haircut please call us at 920-968-0433.
